A bug net is purchased from John at John's Goods, though the first one is obtained from Fletch in the Base Tent after the player's Tent has been placed.

Put the bug in a slot on the toolbelt and left-click to place down a bug inside a Bug Tank (or "x" on Xbox controller).
Increase your bug catching skill to unlock the crafting recipes for the Bee House and
Worm Farm.
Bugs can be found throughout various Biomes; Pine Forest, Plains, Tropics, Desert, and Bushlands.
The Bug Book is a great tool for catching certain bugs.
The Museum Donations by Seasons page groups the Fish, Bugs and Critters for easy viewing.
The Museum Donation Chart is an easy to view chart to compare with the in-game Pedia. The Pedia is sorted by rarity first, then value.
